Registering Computers

What does “Register a Computer” mean?

Your FOG server keeps a list of the computers that you image in the following format:

Computer Name MAC Address
Computer1 00:00:00:00:00:00
Computer2 00:00:00:00:00:00

Adding computers to this list is what “Registering” means. When a computer becomes part of this list, the server can communicate with it and you can pull and image from it,  or deploy an image to it.

Registration is something you need to do only once. If you have used a particular computer either as a master computer to pull an image from, or you have successfully deployed an image to it, the machine is already part of the list and will remain on it.

How to Register a Computer:

There are 2 ways to register a computer with your FOG server.

  1. Boot the computer from the network and when the FOG Menu appears, quickly move to the option “Perform Full Registration.” Give the computer the official name it will have on our network, for example, cpe-lab-21, and that’s it. Skip the rest of the questions by hitting “Enter”.
  2. Install and Configure the FOG Service. This is something you have to do anyway if you want the computer(s) to get joined to the domain automatically. When you install the FOG Service and give it the right configuration, the service will talk to the server and register the computer. See this page for more information. *

* Please note that even if you already registered the computer using method 1 above, you need to enter the correct server information when configuring the FOG Service.
