2. Grab your Tourism Guidebook Feature off of the table.

3. Read announcements on the BIS website. There are many important dates in the near future!

Agenda: 

  1. Mini-lesson on making your magazine covers.
  2. Correct your tourism guidebook feature and e-mail it as an attachment along with a picture that represents the business to Mrs. Sullivan by the end of the day on MONDAY. MAKE SURE you have permission from the business before you send it– you need permission to include them and to use the picture.
  3. Work on your third magazine article. Complete the one of the following three that you have not already finished: Dream Trip eval, international travel, local tourism. Your third article is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday!

2. Practice vocab for your test by playing these vocabulary games.

  3. Grab your Tourism Challenges worksheet off of the table. Many people did not address their question properly on the back of this paper. Here are your Tourism Challenge Questions and Groups for Tourism Problem. Redo the back if you did not correctly address your question. When you are finished, give it to Sullivan. Even if you have a perfect grade, do not keep it; turn it back in. It is due at the start of class TOMORROW.

Warm-Up: 

1. Turn in your final draft of your Southern Oregon Travel Guidebook feature with the rubric attached.

2. Find a partner and discuss the following topics:

What did you know about Mexico before listening to our guest speakers from Mexico?

What are the three most interesting things you learned?

What did you think you knew but didn’t actually turn out to be true?

What does this tell you about stereotypes?

3. Find another group of two people and share what you discussed in your pairs.

4. On a piece of paper, write one or more complete sentences answering each of the questions above. Staple it to your notes worksheet on the speakers from Mexico and turn it in.

  2. Tourism Challenges
    • Present the salient points from your actively read article
    • Take notes on the information presented in your group using the note taking strategy of your choice. Do this on one side of a piece of paper
    • Decide on roles within your group
      • Local or indigenous person (decide upon the career for this person)
      • Government official involved with your issue (choose an appropriate title or invent one for your official)
      • Representative from the UN’s World Tourism Organization
      • Representative from a tourism ethics or sustainability focused organization (PETA, WWF, Tourism Concern, etc.)
    • On the back of your notes, write down your role and brainstorm five questions or concerns “you” would have regarding your tourism challenge.  Due at the end of class today.

  3. Resumes – most students fixed their errors marked but did not read the “non-negotiables” at all.  I stapled a non-negotiable checklist to each students’ resume and they need to get at least 2 people to initial every.single.non.negotiable before resubmitting it.
  4. INDEPENDENT STUDY STUDENTS: Get 1/2 page from Sullivan detailing your final product.
  5. Sign up for your internship.

For example, if you went to India you might read Nectar in a Sieve because it is set in India or you might read Kaffir Boy because it has a similar theme of colonial oppression / poverty.
