We got visitors from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department! They came in to teach us about water safety! After we learned about life jackets and basic safety rules, we got to climb around on their boat!

Bullying Book Project

Taylor Martinez, our helper with Doo Wop, did her senior project with the help of our class. She wanted to work with the kids on an anti-bullying book. She talked about bullying experiences with them, then read “Cinderella” to them. Then she had them write stories about bullying (real or made up). They illustrated their stories, and she put them together in a book for the classroom. Here she is reading a story to the kids and helping them with their own stories.

Dialogue with an Alternate Tag

This week we worked on more dialogue sentences, but this time with an alternate tag. Instead of using “said”, we tried words like sighed, yelled, mumbled, cried and whimpered.  Enjoy!

What Did We Do This Week?

In reading, we started a new theme….AMAZING STORIES! We started it with “Dogzilla”, always a crowd favorite. 🙂 We worked on comprehension, reality vs. fantasy, phonics, spelling, and possessives.  In math, we worked on area. Lots and lots of area….area models, area with multiplying the sides (instead of counting squares), and distributive property for area. We also took a mid-chapter test.  In writing, we wrote imaginative paragraphs.  I am hoping to get them posted next week.  We played in our hockey tournament, with games against Torrey and Hadley.  We also got a chance to watch the first graders at their penguin program rehearsals.

What Did We Do This Week?

In reading, we read three different Trickster Tales.  We worked on spelling the vowel sound “oi”, consonant blends, inflected endings (-ed and -ing), and synonyms. In math, we worked on lots and lots of area, with a focus on using arrays to measure.  In writing, we wrote expository paragraphs, which you can see if you click on that post. We also worked on correcting run on sentences and dialogue sentences. We made banners for our hockey teams and got to watch the first hockey game of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade tournament.
