What Did We Do This Week?

In reading, we looked at nonfiction text features, specifically photos, illustrations, captions, maps, graphs, and tables.  We also had a storyteller come read a different story each day, which the kids really loved.

In math, we worked on time…reading clocks figuring out elapsed time. Elapsed time is extremely difficult, and they did a great job with it.

In science, we looked at where to find fossils.  In writing and social studies, we worked on our biography projects.  In art we started on our biography boards.

We also continued to read aloud “City of Ember.”

Next Thursday, we have a field trip to the Lost Creek Dam, where we will see a giant generator. Permission slips and missing work need to be turned in by Wednesday to attend this field trip.

What Did We Do This Week?

In reading, we looked at author’s viewpoint and purpose. We also started creating a book about nonfiction text features. This week we talked about titles, headings, subheadings, and tables of contents.

In math, we worked on equivalent fractions and adding fractions. We also did a fun problem solving involving sharing cookies.

In science, we talked about where to look for fossils. In social studies and writing, we worked on researching our biographies, and we looked at bibliographies and timelines.

In art, we drew cartoon animals using basic shapes.

We continued reading aloud “The City of Ember.”  Related to that, we will have a field trip to the Lost Creek Dam on May 1st, and we will get to check out the giant generator there. I will send home a letter this next week.

We also had to say goodbye to Mason, who is moving. 🙁 We will miss you, Mason!!!

What Did We Do This Week?

In reading, we read novels in small groups and a story about a boy and a seal in whole group.  We worked on vocabulary, adding -ed or -ing to a verb, consonant clusters, comparing and contrasting, and words with multiple meanings.

In math, we worked on mixed numbers, fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, and equivalent fractions.  We worked on OAKS math testing, and when I have reports, I will send them home.

In science, we looked at how fossils are formed. We completed our art projects (they are in the hallway) and we worked on research for our biographies.  We also started a read aloud called “The City of Ember.”

What Did We Do This Week?

In reading, we continued our novels. We also started a new theme on animal habitats, and we read a story about Puffins set in Iceland.  We also focused on fact vs. opinion and forms of the verb “be.”  In math, we finished up perimeter and started fractions. We looked at fractions as part of a whole and part of a set. We also looked at mixed numbers and improper fractions.  We looked at several biographies this week, and we picked a hero to research. I am putting a link that should have links to information for most of the heroes the kids picked.  In science, we looked at how fossils are formed.

Report Cards & Conferences!

Report cards for the second trimester are coming home Monday.  Due to December’s Snowmageddon, the district decided to cancel conferences next week and add in more days. So we will have school on Wednesday and Thursday. I can’t schedule traditional conferences, but I would love to talk with you about your child. If you would like to talk, I will be available at school for an open house drop in style conference after school Wednesday and Thursday, from 2:30-4 and I will be at school Friday from 8-12 am.  Thank you!
