Who is Mrs. Richards?  Will the class be tough?  Does Mrs. Richards have any interests outside of teaching?

I am married, have two grown children (one cares for animals at a rescue center, the other is a computer programmer).   I moved to Oregon in 2005, and love the fresh air and beauty all around us here in the Rogue Valley.  I currently keep very occupied with three cats, 140 plus students, and lots of yard work.

I like to knit, walk, ski (its been a while), hike and laugh!  Comedies and non-scary science fiction top my list of favorite genres.   And, recently I’ve become a fan of some online sights where I can read about what real scientists are doing.  I love living in a time with so much information available at our fingertips through the internet and all of its many authentic sources for information.  I try to post a few of my favorites including  and which I refer to often for lesson material and general interest in these areas.

My science class can be challenging, because I feel it is not only my job to teach the standards, but to encourage students to stay current with recent science discoveries.  I expect a student to be able to do math, read, write, and participate in class discussion. Many students leave my room, very capable of all of these, and come back to thank me for making things a bit rigorous.  And, of course they can thank their parents,  other teachers, and life experiences, because learning is a lifelong pursuit – one that takes perseverance and dedication.

Finally, I invite your comments and questions to the Blog.  Let’s make this thing come to life.  I’ve had several parents ask about the Blog.  I am hoping to make this more for expanding information, and less for the worksheets.  (Those can be picked up by students in class).  However, I will be posting instructions for any upcoming projects and focus in the calendar section.

Finally, Finally (“Hey Mr. Jackson, can I say that?”) Please take a look at the Public Service section.  I recently visited a local pet food/supply store and really had a heart-break-open moment when I saw so many little creatures needing homes.  Please consider adopting a pet, if you can.

Thank you and have an awesome year!
