Blog Response Number 1

At conferences I mentioned that I would like to try to get more interaction in my BLOG from students and families that might want to interact.

This month’s challenge  is:

Read this article posted on the New York Times website about sand dunes and protecting beaches.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/04/science/earth/after-hurricane-sandy-dunes-prove-they-blunt-storms.html?_r=0

After reading this story, How would you feel about placing dunes along the Oregon coast?  Are they necessary? And, can you suggest other ways to protect our coastlines from storms?  I look forward to reading your comments.  (Students, remember to use name and last initial only.  Your email will not be published but is necessary in order to receive your comment.  Also, think about currents, waves, tsunamis, and other ocean related topics we have studied.)

Up to 5 extra credit points for thoughtful science based comments per student.

I think that we should have dunes because if we ever had a tsunami or tidal wave we would be protected from it a little bit.The cost of getting the dunes would be a lot less than what a hurricanes damage would cost even though maybe the surfers dont like it as much.

I wonder if it might be useful to place sand dunes, and or barriers every so many yards, so it doesn’t destroy the look and enjoyment of the coastline.

I think placing sand dunes along the Oregon caost is a great idea because it might not be necessary but it is good to be protected just in case we have a storm like Sandy. I think a good way to protect our coast is to get really big rocks and make a rock wall about 15 meters off the coastline, so that way when the storm comes, the wall will be able to slow it down a little.

It might take some time, but it seems like an good idea!

i think it would be a good idea because if we place dunes it will protect us from tsunamis and other disasters. also if we do it will cost less in damages, than without dunes.they can protect our coast citys.but, it can upset peaple that go to the beach with 50ft dunes on the beach

I think we need dunes to protect us from snow!!!

I thik they should put dunes so the people can be safe but,I also think that they could find a different way to protect NEW YORKER’s to like constructing a strong and clear material(like plastic or clear matal)or could make a GIANT sponge to obsorb large amounts of water.

Interesting. I thought the sand would look “natural”, but other materials might be cheaper and easier to maneuver. Good thoughts.
